Azhar maintains composure amid personal loss

The great yesteryear cricketer personally acknowledges condolences of all those who turned up for Ayaz's funeral

“Let me play till the last ball,” was the spontaneous remark of former India captain Mohd Azharuddin when the doctors at the Apollo Hospital told him on Thursday evening about the highly critical state of his younger son Md Ayazuddin, literally conveying hopelessness of reviving the young cricketer.

For all those who had seen Azhar as a cricketer, his familiar traits of his cricketing days were too discernible to be ignored. So confident was the MP from Moradabad that he was repeatedly telling his family members, friends and well-wishers that Ayaz would fight back. “Don't worry he will be back from the hospital,” was his constant refrain.

The scenes in the hospital ICU corridor after the news of Ayaz's death broke out, Azhar, dressed in white kurta and pyjama, was a picture of mixed emotions.

The initially impression Azhar gave was that he had taken the Destiny's call in his stride by the way he was interacting with the VIPs. But, the moment he bumped into a close family member, tears rolled down conveying that after all Azhar is also human. “It is difficult but we have to face it,” were his quiet remarks when the visitors tried to console him. Even in the hour of tragedy, the great cricketer of yesteryears made it a point to personally acknowledge the condolences of all those who turned up in the afternoon.MORE
